The Boone Community School District is celebrating its five board members during Iowa School Board Recognition Month.
The month, sponsored by the Iowa Association of School Boards, recognizes the vital role board members play as volunteers in shaping education and supporting students.
“Our Board of Education members dedicated countless hours throughout the year to provide vision, leadership, and support for our schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Julie Trepa. “We are truly grateful for their expertise, thoughtful decision making, and commitment to creating opportunities for every learner. During School Board Recognition Month, we proudly celebrate and thank each board member for their service and impact.”
The board plays a critical role in overseeing the district’s budget, establishing policies, fostering a positive school culture, and making decisions that affect the entire community.
The current Boone CSD Board of Education includes President Pat Thieben (six years of service) and Vice President Dr. Pam Nystrom (six years of service), along with members Jeremy Pritchard (seven years of service), Matt Elthon (four years of service), and Dr. Ryan Huffman (one year of service).
“I became a board member because I’ve spent my entire career in education, and I wanted to continue making a difference after retiring from the Iowa Department of Education,” said Thieben. “Serving on the board allows me to use my experience to support our district and help shape a strong future for our students.”
Boone’s Board of Education received the Iowa Association of School Boards Team Achievement Award for both 2022-23 and 2023-24. To receive this award, the majority of a school’s board members receive Individual Award of Achievement certificates for the year and the board has a policy that supports board development.
The Iowa Association of School Boards Individual Achievement Award honors board members for earning a minimum of 15 hours in one year. In 2023-24, Jeremy Pritchard, Pat Thieben, and Dr. Pam Nystrom received the honor.
“As an educator, I understand the critical role strong schools play in our communities,” said Dr. Nystrom. “Boone CSD is committed to serving all students, and we strive every day to ensure each learner has the support they need to succeed. I’m proud to be part of a district that is willing to go the extra mile for its students.”
